Take care of ZIP files with ease

Info-ZIP is a free utility program that enables you to easily handle ZIP files. Developed and maintained by a dedicated community of programmers and beta-testers, this tool is a set of open-source software designed to open ZIP archives on different operating systems. It consists of four separately-installable packages that can cater to your platform—and some of these even come with additional files for other functions.

Zip that up

Info-ZIP has been around since 1989—its purpose being to provide free, portable, high-quality versions of ZIP tools to anyone in need. Due to its code flexibility, this software has been incorporated into several third-party commercial and freeware products. It also supports old and new hardware thanks to the continued maintenance of its faithful community. The four tools found in this project are Zip, UnZip, WiZ, and MacZip.

Zip is a compressor or archiver used for creating and modifying ZIP files. With it comes three files for documentation: ZipNote for adding or deleting comments, ZipSplit for splitting files, and ZipCloak for encryption and decryption—with an optional add-on package called zcrypt. Meanwhile, UnZip is for extracting and viewing files in ZIP archives and includes documentation files like ZipInfo, fUnZip for extraction, and UnZipSFX for creating self-extracting archives.

The other two tools are platform-specific. WiZ is for Windows and is a graphical front end combination Zip and UnZip. MacZip, on the other hand, is the same but for macOS. These two don’t have documentation for them, though. What’s great about Info-ZIP’s setup is that you can actually download these separately if you don’t want to get everything—the name merely encompasses the entire project for these tools.

Not really tied together

Overall, Info-ZIP is great for anything to do with ZIP files. There’s a good reason why it’s been around for a long time, after all. However, contrary to what most may think, this program isn’t actually a bundle—if you want two or more of the tools, you will have to download them one by one. This can be a hassle for anyone who wants just one easy download, but the files aren’t too bulky.

Softonic

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.
